Research Notes
Death:
A death date and location have been given as 26 Apr 1736 and South Carolina.[citation needed]. Douglas Richardson's Royal Ancestry does not show him immigrating to South Carolina (which would have made William a Gateway Ancestor), nor does he show a death date.[2] (South Carolina category was removed.) Bedfordshire Parish records include burial at Pavenham of three William Alstons:[5]
William Alston, Esq., was buried 16 November 1708
William Alston, Gent., was buried 1 December 1713.
William Alston, "Attorney-at-Law", was buried 26 April 1736.
Son John: Richardson's footnote in Royal Ancestry discusses WIlliam's son, John, noting that he was apprenticed to James Jones, merchant of Charleston and immigrated to Charleston, SC sometime around 1682, settling in St. John's, Berkeley, South Carolina and leaving a will dated 2 January 1718.[2]
The following sources were included in the footnote:<rev name="raV139" />
Lionel Cresswell, Stemmata Alstoniana, (1905): 19, 236, 399-400 (Online PDF).
South Carolina Mag. of Ancestral Research 34 (2006): 63-68.
Cresswell's Stemmata Alstoniana (page 400) concludes that the son of William (eldest son of John Alston and Dorothy Temple) could have "[c]onceivably... been the John Allston of St. John's, Berkeley S. Carolina, whose will is dated ... January 2nd, 1718 or the John Alston of Chowan County, N. Carolina, whose will is dated September, 1754. But in my opinion the mere existence of two Johns—contemporaries—in America disposes of the claims of both in the absence of prima facie evidence. The fact that one of the daughters of the first John was called Tomassin is not evidence."[6]

Magna Carta Project
William Alston appears in a trail that was identified and badged by the Magna Carta Project from Gateway Ancestor John Alston to Magna Carta Surety Baron Saher de Quincy in 2015. Other trails were later identified and badged from Alston to surety barons John de Lacy, Gilbert de Clare, Richard de Clare, Hugh le Bigod, Roger le Bigod, and John FitzRobert. This profile also appears in a Richardson-documented trail from Alston to Magna Carta Surety Baron Robert de Vere (vol. III, pages 225-230 NELSON) that needs further development. The trails can be viewed in the Magna Carta Trails section of John Alston's profile.
