William Baird of Elie died on 29th June 1918, survived by his widow, one son, and two daughters.
He directed his trustees to pay to each of his daughters, Mrs Ethel Mary Baird or Dutton (who became Lady Sherborne on her husband succeeding to the title) and Janet Muriel Baird (who became Mrs Noel), an annuity of 5000.
With regard to the position of Lady Sherborne and Mrs Noel, the testator's daughters, the case set forth:"In the case of Baroness Sherborne, the fourth party, her independent income and that of her husband Baron Sherborne are added to her annuity in computing his liability for income tax and surtax. Similarly, in the case of Mrs Noel, the fifth party, her independent income and that of her husband Captain Henry Cecil Noel during his life were added to her annuity in computing his liability for income tax and surtax. She derives an independent income from the estate of her deceased husband and from funds held in trust under the will of his mother, Lady Augusta Noel. In addition, she had before marriage, and still has, a small independent personal income. Lady Sherborne, the fourth party, was married during the testator's lifetime, but it was only in January 1920 that her husband, Baron Sherborne, succeeded to the title and the family landed estates. Mrs Noel, the fifth party, was unmarried at the date of the testator's death, and her marriage to Captain Noel took place on 7th August 1926. Captain Noel died on 28th August 1931
