Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bayly-8

William Bayly or Baylie lived in Lea or Overleigh in the parish of Westbury, Gloucestershire.

His wife's name was Ann.

His is known to have had four children:

  1. Margaret, possibly baptised 29 August 1563, Westbury - "Mary Bayly daughter of Willm Bayly"[1] She married William Fowle on 27 January 1583/4 in Westbury.[2]
  2. Dorothy. She married Richard Yonge on 10 February 1588/9 in Westbury.[3]
  3. Elizabeth
  4. Joseph, probably baptised 30 August 1573, Westbury - "Joseph Bayly sonne of Willm Bayly"[4 ]

A severe outbreak of the plague and other disease swept through the city of Bristol in 1603-4, claiming the lives of nearly 3,000 residents.[5] This might explain the tragedy that struck William's family in 1603 - when his son Joseph, Joseph's wife Margery and their three young children all died within the space of four months. William was granted administration of his son Joseph's estate on 27 June 1604 by the Consistory Court of Gloucester.[6]

William outlived his son by almost 10 years and was buried on 7 March 1613/4 at Westbury, Gloucestershire. The burial register describes him as "Willm Bayly of ley gen."[7]

He left a will dated 2 March 16[13/4?], in which he is described as "... Baylie of overleygh in the pish of westbury in the county & Diocesse of Glouc gentleman".[8] His will was proved in March 1613/4 and among the people it names are:

  • "Ann my wief"
  • "Joseph Fowle the yonger sonne of William Fowle late of Huntley deceased by him begotten uppon the body of Margaret his wief my daughter”
  • “William Fowle eldest sonne of the saied Margarett my daughter”
  • "John Warren my sonne in lawe" and "the said John Warren and my saide daughter Margaret now his wief"
  • "Joseph Baylie my sonne lately deceased"
  • "Elizabeth Bridger and Mary Bridger two of the daughters of Lawrence Bridges ... [illegible] Slymbridge) my sonne in lawe by ... Elizabeth now his wief my daughter"
  • "Lawrence Bridger and Elizabeth his saied and ... Richard Yong and Dorothie now his wief my daughters"
  • "Richard Yong ... unto his daughter Elizabeth Yong

Research Notes

His birth year is estimated at 1540, which would have made him aged about 44 when his daughter Margaret was married in 1584.[2]

Some online family trees say he was born, lived or died in Everleigh, Wiltshire, some 60 miles from Westbury-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. This is almost certainly incorrect. The contemporary records indicate he lived in "Ley" or "Overleygh" in the parish of Westbury, Gloucestershire. Five of the parish's tythings ended in the suffix "ley", which denoted a clearing in its once thickly wooded terrain.[9] A "John Bailly of Overleigh, Glos" acquired rights to lands in the lordship of Rodley in the parish of Westbury, Gloucestershire, in 1503.[10]

After his death, there was a Chancery lawsuit over land he had possessed in Westbury. The plaintiff was Richard Berrow. The defendants were Joseph Fowle, Margaret Warren, Richard Young and Dorothy Young his wife, Lawrence Bridger and Elizabeth Bridger his wife, Henry Wintle, Mary Keyse.[11]

A previous version of this profile stated his children were:

  • Joseph Bayles b: Abt 1580 in Westbury, Gloucestershire, England
  • Margaret Bayles b: Abt 1587 in Middlesex, England c: 13 Jan 1592 in Everleigh, Clouchester County, England
  • William Bayles b: Abt 1590 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England[12]

HIstory of Everleigh

Hawking was the principal interest of the sixteenth-century landowner Sir Ralph Sadleir, who held the office of queen’s falconer; Everleigh was not an agricultural estate, it was more like a royal hunting ground.

Everleigh was held by Sir Ralph Sadleir (1507-1587) principal secretary of state to Henry VIII. Ralph Sadler, first son of Henry Sadler, was born in 1507. His father worked as a steward for Thomas Grey, 2nd Marquess of Dorset. Under Thomas Cromwell he rose to great power and died the richest commoner in England. Francis Dugdale Astley, Esq. inherited the estate in 1711 and demolished the old church, and built a new manor house in 1711, but brought many of the relics to the new church he built. .If projected northward the Old Marlborough Road would pass close to the old manor house and adjacent site of the old church.

Everleigh is in Wiltshire. Possibly it was in Gloustershire in 1613, when the will was written. The parish church for Everleigh is St. Peter’s, so that is where William was buried, about March 1614.”
