Although he was born in Marietta he lived most of his life in Belpre. He was a Washington County surveyor from Feb. 1827 until May 1834, and also an early justice of Belpre Township. He was a keeper of a ferry in the early days, and was the first member received into the Congregational Church in Belpre after its organization in March of 1827. When he died he was described on his tombstone as being "a consistent and faithful Christian". His family Bible, published in 1816, has an entry in the middle which states "He was a kind father and good man, loved by many." His obituary appeared in the Marietta (Ohio) "Intelligencer", 5 June 1851. His will can be found in Washington County, Ohio, Probate Court Records, volume 8, page 587
