William Cocke8 (Thomas', Richard1) married twice and lived to be nearly 50 years old. He was born probably about 1669, for when his father made his will, 10 December 1696, William Cocke's first wife, mother of his eldest daughter Sarah Cocke *, was then no longer alive.

4 It is easy to see how the confusion arose between William Cox, son of John Cox Sr and William Cocke, son of Thomas Cocke of Pick-thorn Farm who both lived in Henrico county about the same time. Each had a w.fe named Sarah. and William Cox and his wife Sarah had a son Stephen Cox, wl.de William Cocke had a brother named Stephen Cocke. One of William Cox's daughters was Martha Cox who married Henry Wood at Bremo in 1723»

William - born before Feb. 1664/65. He married Sarah (-). They had seven children.

He held 300 acres on the 1704 quit rent roll of Henrico County. His will was probated in Henrico County in June 1712. His widow's will was probated in Goochland County in Jan. 1747/48. William Cox, the elder, was given 300 acres of land, Deed Book 1, page 364, April 1, 1686, Henrico County, by his father, John Cox [I]: "land adjacent to Thomas Taylor," including a boat landing on James River up toward Culres.

William Cox the elder has been confused with his nephew, William Cox the younger. William Cox the younger married Sarah Cocke, daughter of William Cocke; and William Cox the elder had wife Sarah (-) also, thought to have been a Sarah Cocke. (There is a marriage record of a William Cocke to Sarah Dennis, also, a statement that William Cox married Sarah Dennis. It is possible that both statements are correct.)

William Cox [3560.C.1] (-1712) married Sarah -.

  • His wife was possibly Sarah Taylor since Thomas Taylor witnessed his father's will and John Taylor that of his wife's nearly thirty years later.
  • Cox paid quit rents on 300 acres in Henrico County in 1704. William left a will in Henrico County that mentioned his wife, Sarah, and identified seven children. Robert Burton and nephew William Cox witnessed the "planter" sign his name to the instrument (will dated 20 Feb. 1711/2, & recorded 2 June 1712).
  • Widow, Sarah, was living in Goochland County when she made her will (will dated 29 Mar. 1726, recorded 20 Jan. 1747/8). Mary, Prudence, Judith, and Edith were then still unmarried. Edith was the wife of William Harding 21 years later when he presented Sarah's will. Among the witnesses to Sarah's will was John Taylor.

William Cox (John [I], William), born before Feb. 1664/65, was listed with 300 acres on the 1704 quit rent roll of Henrico County. He married Sarah (-), who may have been Sarah Taylor. He left will 24 Feb. 1711/12 - 2 June 1712, and his widow left will 29 March 1726 - 20 Jan. 1747/48.
