About William Copeland, Ill
Per Herman Coplen's book: In the 1750's, William Copeland was listed as Scottish Merchant in Caroline Co VA. His sons, William and Peter, also served as factors (merchants) for him. William and his father William, evidently had visited Chowan Pct NC prior to their 1712 move since he met and married Sarah Champen (or Champion) there c1705. His wife's father, John Champen, left his grandson, Peter Copland, 250 acres of land per his will to be given him when he reached the age of 21 years. William served as Constable for Chowan Pct for a period prior to 1715. A list of Chowan Co NC tax delinquents or Insolvents for 1754 shows William as having "left the county". However, he was apparently deceased, since his will, which was witnessed by his brother, Charles Copeland, was probated in Chowan Co NC in 1753.
