William Dennie

William Dennie was a wealthy bachelor. Like his half brothers, John and Albert, he was a town constable in his youth and he succeeded his father John Dennie as director of the towns warehouse "opposite the Golden Ball". He was active in the interest of the colonist from 1770 to 1775 serving as several important committees with Hancock, Otis, Warren and the Adamses. But after Concord and Lexington he declined to go further. Though elected to the Committee of Safety he refused to serve and a substitute was was elected August 29, 1776. His will was probated in 1783 with generous legacies being left to numerous relatives. A large part of his property was left to Mrs Elizabeth Swan, wife of Mayor James Swan merchant of Dorchester.
