About William Fitzwilliam, 1st Earl of Southampton
http://www.luminarium.org/encyclopedia/fitzwilliam.htm
This portrait is erroneously inscribed with the name of Sir Thomas Moore, but the sitter is undeniably William Fitzwilliam. There is a drawing by Holbein of around 1540, of the same sitter, in the Royal Collection. Fitzwilliam held various official posts: ambassador to France, Lord Privy Seal and Lord High Admiral. He was created Earl of Southampton in 1537, and married Mabel Clifford, sister of the 1st Earl of Cumberland. Mabel was an ancestor of Charlotte Boyle (1731-1754), wife William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire (1720-1764).
