1. Waters DUNN Sr. was born about 1725 in Essex Co.,VA. He died in 1803 in*Columbia Co., GA.*Waters Dunn, Peter Copland, and Joseph Farguson married three sisters,*Sarah Gatewood, Elizabeth Gatewood, Patience Gatewood respectively. Waters*and Joseph were from Essex Co. Copland had some ties there but was mainly*in the Caroline, Spottsylvania Co area, living in Caroline in 1754, already*married to Elizabeth Gatewood. Waters came to Halifax Co from Essex Co by*1762/3, (out of Halifax came Pittsylvania in 1767, out of Pittsylvania came*Henry in 1777). Peter Copland came to area by 1767 (was in NC in 1765),*Joseph Farguson came after 1771. All there men were active in court*records, including several suits against each other (Waters and P. Copland)*and buying and selling land to each other. Copland appears to have been a*type of land agent for a Williamsburg faction and had political connections*demonstrated by being in NC in 1765, but being named one of first*commissioners of newly formed Pittsylvania Co, Va in 1767. Waters was kept*busy administering and appraising estates (especially for widows) , and*engaging in law suits both as plaintiff and defendent. Farguson was not as*visible in the records except for the time he was placed in the public*stocks in order to cool down from what must have been a violent outburst in*court. Farguson referred to Waters as "my good and trusted friend". Waters*was once locked up in Halifax Co jail himself. (Jim K. Pages 84-86 Will of William Gatewood of the County of Essex and Parrish of Southfarnham, being sick and weak of body, dated 18 Sept. 1743. All my land to my son William Gatewood and to his heirs and for want of such to descend to my daughter Katey Gatewood and her heirs and for want of such to goe to my daughter Elizabeth Purkins.
