About William Gilderdale

William and Martha's marriage was registered in Pontefract in March 1857. In 1861 they were in Mirfield, and he was working as a Railway Station Clerk. Here his birthplace is given as Mirfield, but in other records it was given as Whitley Bridge Kellington. In 1867, when Arthur was baptised, his occupation is listed as Railway station master. By 1881 the couple and their family were registered as living at 6 Belgrave Terrace, Stanley Cum Wrenthorpe, Yorkshire and he was working as a bookkeeper. Almost all the children were born in different places, suggesting a rather itinerant lifestyle. in 1885 a bookkeeper called William Gilderdale was the complainant in a case of assault. He was recorded as living in Ossett and was a bookkeeper for William Cudworth and Son. He accused his former employer (now bankrupt) of assaulting him. The case was proved, but provocation, by way of foul language, was noted. By 1891, however, the family was settled in Sandal Road, Sandal Magna, and William was working as a factory clerk in a cloth mill. In the 1901 census, William and Martha Gilderdale, both 67, were living at 131 Ellens Terrace, Sandal Magna, together with Jane Gilderdale, daughter aged 30, dressmaker working on her own account at home, born Heckmondwike; together with Lilly Firth, niece, 18 born Whiteley Kellington - occupation unreadable. William's occupation was given as 'rent collector'. Ten years later, Martha Jane was still single and living at home, William was still working as a 'rent agent', but neither Martha or Martha Jane were working. They now lived at 9 Gathorne Terrace, Sandal Magna, Wakefield (a street that appears not to exist today).
