In 1880 William Adolphus and his family lived in Garnett, Anderson Co., Kansas. William was a farmer. His daughters Effie Lee and Sue Bell were school teachers.

William and Sophia were divorced June 26, 1897. In 1886 and 1898 he was listed in the Ft. Scott, KS City Directory as a traveling monument salesman for the Ft. Scott Granite & Marble Works. He married Mary Elizabeth Housman (her married name) May 8, 1898 in Ft. Scott, Kansas. It was his 2nd marriage and her 4th.

William died at his home at 203 North Main, Wichita, Kansas in 1909 of heart trouble. He had been in Kansas since 1868. He served in the Civil War with the 129th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry as a corporal. He was enrolled at Exeter, Illinois on 13 August 1862 as a drummer. He was honorably discharged at Louisville, Ky on 30 Oct 1862 for disability, suffering from a hernia. At the time of his enlistment he was described as 5'10" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.

He drew an invalid pension as a consequence of his hernia and was declared to be totally disabled for manual labor. According to his death certificate, his occupation was "monument agent".
