Lt. W.W. Govan Co. K 8th Mississippi Cavalry Killed in action at the Battle of Brice's Crossroads near Baldwyn, Ms. on June 10,1864

  • * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The grave marker for Liet W W Govan in Mississippi was misspelled. I uploaded the soldiers Confederate service records where you can see they actually spelled his name "Gayen" on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd pages. On the 4th and 5th pages they spell it correctly as "Goyen". Finally, on the final "typed" page, they spelled his last name as "Goven".

From this final misspelling, those who prepared the headstone misspelled the misspelling, and made it "Govan".

The real name of this soldier is William W. Goyen. He served in several Mississippi units. He was first a 3rd Lieut. in the 24th Regiment Miss, Co. B from Aug 24, 1861 to March 4, 1862. He then reenlisted on May 8, 1863 into Capt. T P Montgomery's Co., Miss. He was then transferred to Perrin's Batallion Miss Cav from July 1863 to Oct 1863. Finally, as you can see from the records downloaded, he was transferred into the 8th Miss Cav, K Co acting as 1st Lieut from Jan 1864 to June 10, 1864 when he was killed at Brice's Crossroads.

Additionally, his wife Sarah Bell Goyen - I have the Census records if needed. His son is John Bell Goyen buried in Houston, Texas.
