William was adopted by Dr. Vincent likely due to the financial hardship brought on by Florida's Great Freeze in 1894/1895. The freeze destroyed the family citrus farm. With the exception of Jack, the family relocated to Rhode Island where the children were separated from their father and stepmother. One report states that William was adopted by Dr. Vincent after his mother, Mary Ann Smith Wilbur, had died.
