About William Haynes Hamblin
William Haynes Hamblin (1830 - 1872), also known as Gunlock Bill, was the brother of Jacob Hamblin "the Buckskin Missionary". The son of Isaiah Hamblin and Daphne Haynes, he was born 25 October 1830 at Bainbridge, Geauga County, Ohio. He came to Utah with his family in 1849. An expert rifleman, the town of Gunlock, Utah was named for him. The town of Pipe Springs acquired its name after he shot the bottom out of the bowl of a smoking pipe there. He and Tarlton Blair were shown the mineral deposits at Pioche, Nevada, by local Indians and thus have often been credited with "discovering" the ore.
In 1872 he was poisoned by someone who didn't want him to testify in court over a mining claim dispute. Although he survived this attempt on his life, he left Pioche and died soon after he joined family members in Clover Valley, on 8 May 1872. He was 41 years old. He was buried at Clover Valley Cemetery, Barclay, Lincoln County, Nevada.
