Gretchen Hanna, 91, of Bradenton died May 4, 2009,
while sitting peacefully in her favorite chair overlooking beautiful Swan Lake.
She was born in Detroit, Mich., and lived in Huntington Woods, Mich., where she and her beloved husband, Bill, raised their three children. She was a dedicated bridge player, bowler, Republican Party volunteer, Girl Scout leader, and tireless library worker. They relocated to Bradenton in 1971.
Gretchen was predeceased by her husband, William A. Hanna, in 1978, and by her daughter Sharon Whitmer, in 2002. She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Barton (James) of Naples and Grand Rapids, Mich., and by her son, Richard (Kyle) of Shelby Township, Mich. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Gretchen was beloved by all who knew her. She always had a welcoming smile, a ready laugh, and, in spite of her petite size, a strong shoulder to lean on. She was a volunteer at Manatee Memorial Hospital for 30 years.
