Feb. 24, 1944, The Pell City News: BOYKIN TRUITT, TWO OTHERS KILLED IN MINE ACCIDENT. Two white men and a Negro were killed in a mine accident at the number 6 mine of the Alabama Fuel and Iron Company at Acmar at about 10 o'clock Tuesday night.

Boykin Truitt, 45, mine foreman, and Louis Hawkins, about 36, and Charlie Carter, Negro miner, were trapped and crushed by the falling of a huge rock. Both Mr. Truitt and Mr. Hawkins died from internal injuries. The body of Carter had not been recovered at a late hour Wednesday afternoon.

Both men were well known in St. Clair County. Mr. Truitt was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Truitt, had lived near Eden throughout his life and was a member of the Eden Baptist Church. He was active in all church affairs. Together with Rev. Bryce Inzer, he had just recently formed an association for the care of the cemetery at Eden and Mt. Carmel. He had moved his family from Eden to White's Chapel a little more than a year ago, but kept a furnished room at his Eden home available for frequent overnight visits.

Funeral plans are pending until it is known when a son, Reeves Truitt in service with the U. S. Marines at San Diego, will arrive home.

He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Lena Reeves Truitt; 2 sons, Reeves and Johnnie Wilson; and 2 daughters, Mrs. Floyd Hodgens, Detroit, and Doris Ann; 8 brothers, Leroy and Melvin Truitt, Eden; John W. Truitt, Pell City; Euclid, Horace and Dewin Truitt, Birmingham; Clarence Truitt, Shreveport; and Otis Truitt, Acmar; and 2 sisters, Mrs. Pauline Guthrie and Mrs. Violet Ray, Birmingham.

Mr. Hawkins is survived by the widow and four children. Plans and date for his funeral will be announced by Brown-Service, Birmingham. Plans for Mr. Truitt's funeral will be announced by Kilgroe.
