About William Hayter
After his mother (Clarissa)'s death in 1869, William "went for a soldier" and disappeared to India with the Royal Madras and then the 102nd Foot. He appears in the 1881 census as a Serjeant of the 102nd travelling on the troop ship "Euphrates". He is also married. His eldest child (another Clarissa) was born in India and he may have married there in Bengal to an Emily Turner. If so, then she died and he married again to a Charlotte who appears as his wife in the 1901 census. This marriage may have taken place almost anywhere as his children were latterly born in Ireland and London! (The 102nd Foot merged with another regiment in July 1881 to become the Royal Dublin Fusiliers). In the 1901 he is living in Bethnal Green, London and working as an office messenger (shades of Rudyard Kipling, as Rod Stevens pointed out!).
