William Hooper
The death of Mr. William Hooper occurred at his residence, Main street, Clare, on Saturday. Mr. Hooper was a mechanic, and was 83 years of age. He was born at Alternun, Cornwall, England, and arrived in Australia in 1845 by the ship Isabella Watson. He resided with his parents at Bowden until 1852, when he went to the Victorian gold diggings, where he was fairly fortunate. He returned to South Australia in ,1856, and engaged in business at Mount Barker till 1876. He then went to Clare as a fitter for Messrs. Ranlsy and Smith, and remained in their employ until the firm closed its works, when he set up as a mechanic in Clare. Mr. Hooper was a member of the Oddfellows' Lodge for 65 years, having joined at the age of 18 years at North Adelaide. He was associated with the Clare Baptist Church, and five years ago was made a life member of the Labour Union of Clare and Vice-President.
Mr. Hooper left a widow, two sons (Mr. B Hooper, of Quorn, Mr. Albert Hooper of Western Australia), six daughters (Mrs. Marchant of Unley. E. J. Scott of Clare, Mrs. Skipworth of Tasmania, Mrs. McLeod and Misses Ruby and Elsie, of Clare), 23 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

The death is announced of one of Clare's oldest citizens in the person of Mr. William Hooper, who died at his residence on Saturday last, after a short illness. He was 83 years of age. The deceased was a colonist of 70 years. He was born at Altarnun, Cornwall, in 1832. He came to Australia in the ship Isabella Wilson in May, 1846, and resided with his parents at Bowdon.
He went to the Victoria gold diggings in 1852. After returning, he married and settled at Mount Barker, starting business there as a bootmaker.
He went to Clare in 1866. He was one of the founders of the United Labor Party in Clare, and held the position of president for a term. Some years ago he was made a life member and vice-president, which positions he filled at the time of his death. He was also one of the founders of the Baptist Church in Clare.
