About William Hopkins, of Stratford

William Hopkins appears as assistant of Connecticut Colony in 1641-2. This was the title then applied to members of the upper house of the legislature. There are no probate records preserved of Stratford settlers who died early and William must have died soon after 1642, unless he returned to England and died there.

According to Anderson's "Great Migration" project, Mary was married to Richard Whitehead after her marriage to William Hopkins but Anderson does not make claims as to her maiden name or origin. Text follows: [2] On 2 September 1670 a deposition was made regarding "Mary Whitehead the known mother of Mary the wife of Lt. William Lewis of Farmington" (Manwaring 1:215 (Mary, widow of William Hopkins, married as her second husband Richard Whitehead of Windsor))"

Notes

From http://kirkpatrick.familygenes.ca/getperson.php?personID=I30832&tre...

William Hopkins was in Stratford as early as 1640. He was Assistant Magistrate 1641-2, but there are no records of his origins, when he diedor what wife or children he had.
It is thought that his widow Mary, then wife of Richard Whitehead of Windsor, negotiated a contract with William Lewis of Farmington for the marriage of their children. William's daughter Mary became wife of William Lewis, Jr., son of the bargainer. From this, it can be inferred that William died prior to 1644.

From http://kirkpatrick.familygenes.ca/getperson.php?personID=I30833&tre...

The will of Richard Whitehead indicates that Mary "Lewes" was his stepdaughter ("my daughter in law") and appears to be, with his wife, his principal heir. Whitehead's will also mentions that 100 pounds due to his wife Mary "while she was sole and unmarried, which money was entrustedwith my brother in law Hugh Hopkins and, by him, by and with the consentof my said wife and daughter, delivered unto me for the use of my saiddaughter, etc." .
This seems to indicate that wife Mary had a brother or brother-in-law Hugh Hopkins, perhaps the brother of her deceased husband William Hopkins, and that she had a daughter Mary who had married a man named "Lewes" (or Lewis). From these scant clues, we believe that this is the wife and the daughter of William Hopkins.
