Commissioned a third lieutenant in the U.S. Revenue Marine Service on December 15, 1852, but shortly thereafter relieved of duty with others as part of a budget problem in the Service. However, he eventually served in the Service aboard the "Campbell" according to letters sent to Mary H. (Byrd) Claiborne.
Enlisted in Richmond, Virginia, as a private on May, 8, 1861 in Company I, Virginia 4th Cavalry Regiment. Mustered out on November 25, 1863 and transferred to Woolfolk's Company, Virginia Light Artillery (Ashland Light Artillery).
His death was announced in the February 13, 1872 edition of the "Richmond Whig" where he was identified as a resident of the city and the son of the "late Commodore Beverly Kennon."
