From an essay by Dr. Clanton Ware Williams for his Master's Degree at Univ. of AL: " Under the next king (James V), the property of the MacGregors was confiscated. This property in turn, was redeemed by Queen Mary, with all the family honors, and that state of affairs lasted until Montrose Rebellion, in which Patrick MacGregor joined Montrose in support of the royal cause. . . . This was during the Civil War of 1644, in which Charles I was defeated and executed. The property of the MacGregors was again confiscated."

The Legend of Thomas McGehee McGehee family legend has long held that Thomas Mack Gehee was originally James McGregor, of the Clan Gregor, and that his father was Patrick McGregor, a chieftain of the McGregor clan, and that they together fought with Montrose in the so-called Montrose Rebellion (see Scotland in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and Undiscovered Scotland: The Ultimate Online Guide: Timeline: 1640 to 1660). The family originated as McGregor in Scotland, came to Virginia, and changed their name to MackGehee. The reason for the name change was an on-again, off-again prohibition of the Clan Gregor name by the government.

LIFE SKETCH OF WILLIAM MCGHEE (1672-1748) (Note: data mostly provided by John W. McGehee of Greensboro, North Carolina, and presented in McGhee Descendans, 1:43-44.

Henrico Co., Va., Records, 1688-97, p. 843: On 22 June 1696 William Mackgehee of New Kent Co., Va., bought from Alexander MacKenny of New Kent Co. 200 a. in Henrico Co. on the river adjoining lands of Samuel Bridgewater for 3000 lbs. of tobacco.

Vestry Book and Regsistry of St. Peter's Parish in New Kent and and James City Counties, Va., 1684-1786, p. 57: Will Mackgehee was listed in June 1698 as a tithable, and again as Wm. Mackgehe as a tithable on 10 July 1698.

Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, 31:224: William McKgehe was listed in the rent roll of St. Peters and St. Pauls Parish, New Kent Co., in 1704 for 131 1/2 a.

The Vesstry Book of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., Va. (formed from the upper part of St. Peter's Parish in 1704), p. 123, etc.: William McGehee held lands in Prec. 12 on 17 March 1712 and 10 October 1719; in new Prec. 3 and 20 on 29 Oct 1731; and in Prec 14 on 18 October 1735 (also McGehee listed).

Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. VI, p. 14: On 2 Jan 1733/34 William Magehe (McGee), a Quaker, served on the marriage committee of Charles Johnson at Henrico MM, Virginia. JFV

This William was a Quaker. He has been confused with his nephew (see profile for LTJW-W5D, his nephew) in many of the genealogy records.

In St. Paul's Processioning, this William McGehee appears to disappear after 1743. He would have been 66-76 years of age. Samuel McGehee is shown in the 1751 processioning and afterwards as deceased. The land reverts to McGehee orphans.

This William was apparently reversed with William, son of Thomas, by Robert F. Cole in his letter to Dana Gatchell, 19 May 1953.

Appears in St. Paul's records, Hanover County, in 1735, 1739, 1743, along with a Samuel McGehee. They have the same neighbors, particularly the Johnsons and continue to be shown in the same precinct.

1704 - William Mckgehe is shown with 131 and 1/2 acres in New Kent County in that portion that became St. Paul's Parish and later Hanover County.

17 Mar 1711 - William McGehee appears in Vestry Book of St. Paul's Parish, still in King William in processioning return. His holdings are grouped with George Lovell, John Johnson, Benj. Johnson, and Hugh Case, Thomas Stanley, and John Harris

The holdings of this William McGehee were obiviously in that part of King William that became Hanover County in 1720.

1731-32 - Samuel McGehee shows up for the first time in the same precinct as William McGehee, the Quaker.

Disappears from St. Paul's processioning after 1743.

This was during the Civil War of 1644, in which Charles I was defeated and executed. The property of the MacGregors was again confiscated."

The Legend of Thomas McGehee
McGehee family legend has long held that Thomas Mack Gehee was originally James McGregor, of the Clan Gregor, and that his father was Patrick McGregor, a chieftain of the McGregor clan, and that they together fought with Montrose in the so-called Montrose Rebellion (see Scotland in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and Undiscovered Scotland: The Ultimate Online Guide: Timeline: 1640 to 1660). The family originated as McGregor in Scotland, came to Virginia, and changed their name to MackGehee. The reason for the name change was an on-again, off-again prohibition of the Clan Gregor name by the government.

Notes

1696, June 22, Alexander Mackenny, of New Kent County to William Mackgehee, of New Kent County, for 3,000 pounds sweet scented tobacco conveys to said Mackgehee, 200 acres in Henrico County adjoining the lands of Samuel Bridgewater (Henrico Records 1688-'97, p. 643)

The destruction of New Kent records prevents the discovery of any data from the county records. The Vestry Book of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent, p. 45 gives "Will Mackgeehe" as a tithable in June 1698. The Register of St.Peter's Parish, New Kent, 1680-1787 gives these items: "Will: sone to Tho. Mackeke, bapt. ye 10 day of Octo. 1689" (page 22); "Thomas Butts, Gent. & Catherine Maclegehe was married ye 2d of Apr. 1713" (page 47); "James and William sons of James & Ann McGehee born March 31, 1756" (page 167).
