"On 28 April 1864, the eve of the Battle of Gate Pā / Pukehinahina, British officers not on duty gathered for dinner in the Mission House at Te Papa Mission Station. Assistant Surgeon William George Nicholas Manley would be the only one of them to survive the following day's battle. He is also the only recipient of both the Victoria Cross (VC) and the Iron Cross."
