William Edward Mayes

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the artist William Edward Mayes. We have a number of paintings by Mayes in our collections.

He was born in 1860 and was the second son of the Sea Captain John Mayes. He married Rosanna Downing, daughter of another Sea Captain. They had a family of two sons and three daughters. For many years they lived in Foundary House while he was the manager of the Yarmouth Foundary. In the early 1920's he retired and moved to 216 Palgrave Road, from where he continued to cycle out into the countryside making notes and sketches so he could later produce finished pictures. In his art he was chiefly influenced by S.J Batchelder. Apparently his favourite watering hole was Divers at the top of Regent Road Great Yarmouth. He died April 12th 1952 aged 91.
