William McCoy was the son of John and Margaret Jackson McCoy. He married Sarah James, daughter of Samuel and Pernina Dean James, and granddaughter of John and Haner Dean, on December 23, 1836, in Pike County, Kentucky. Their children were John Jackson "Polite John," Malinda Margaret, Tamsey Elizabeth, Pleasant P., twins Andrew W. and William, Examinnie, Martha Ann, Sarah Florence, Samuel David, and Miranda Caroline.
