About William Hugh McDonald
TAB MHG 13513 of 1988. Hugh served in the Engineer Corps of the SA Army incorporated into the British 8th Army during WWII. During his service in the desert, Hugh was taken prisoner of war for a brief period after surviving a hand to hand combat encounter which left him temporarily blinded from a blow to the head. He and a fellow prisoner escaped into the desert during a sandstorm. He, supporting his mate who had difficulty walking, and being led by the mate as he could not see. They were picked up by the Long Range Desert Group and returned to friendly territory.
