_Burke's genealogical and heraldic history of the landed gentry, Volume 2_, p. 855, John Burke, notes the following.

"The ancient family of Meadows derive their descent from Edmund de Wytnesham, living at Wytnesham in the latter part of the reign of William the Conqueror. He m. and had a son and successor, Robert de Medewe, so called from the circumstance of his fixing his residence in the vale of Wytnesham, which chiefly consisted of the most fertile meadow land. The next descent on record was Peter de Medewe, living at Wytnesham, temp. Henry II., 118, from whom lineally descended Robert de Medewe, who resided at Hasketon, Suf- folk, temp. Edward III., 1328, and was afterwards of Wytnesham. He was s. by his son, Jeffery de Medewe, of Witnesham, living there in 1351. THe next in lineal descent of whom there is any authentic account was Jeffery de Medewe, of Witnesham, living there, temp. Henry VII., 1441. He m. Margaret Fairfax and had issue by her, three sons, viz.,

I. Jeffery, his heir, who left at his decease a son, John Medow II. John, living in 1486. III. William, living in 1456, d. in 1486.

John Medew, the 2nd son of Jeffery de Medewe, and eventually his heir, m. -- Butler, and was s. by his only son,

William Medow, living in 1535, who m. Deborah, dau. of Edward Duke, Esq. of Benhall, (by Dorothy, dau. of Sir Ambrose Jermyn, of Rushbrooke, Knt.) and aunt of

Sir John Duke, Bart. of Benhall. Mr. Medow d. in the year 1540, and was s. by

William Medowe, of Witnesham and Rushmere, who was s. in 1530, and d. at the latter place in 1588. He left, by Agnes, his wife, (whom he had m. in 1558), two sons, viz.

I. William, his heir.

II. Daniel, of Chattisham Hall, which he purchased about the year 1615, b. at Rushmere in 1577. He also pur- chased the lordship and advowson of Witnesham, and d. 7 Sept. 1651. By Elizabeth, his wife, he had issue,

1. Daniel, his heir, b. in 1618, m. a ad. of Sir Richard Broke, of Cow Hall, Norton.

2. John, M.A., formerly fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge, and afterwards rector of Owsden, Suffolk, but ejected, in 1662, for non-compliance with the Act of Uniformity. This gentleman was m. three times:

1st to Anne, ad. of Roger Rant, Esq. of Swaffham Priors; 2ndly. to Sarah Fairfax, a descendant of the knightly family of that name, seated at Walton, in Yorkshire; and 3rdly, to Anna, ad. of John Beau- mont, Esq. of Bildeston.

3. Thomas, of London, b. in 1623

Sir Phillip, baptized at Chattisham, 4 Jan. 1625, was educated at Cambridge, and became Latin secretary to the Lord Protector, knight marshal of the palace, and knight of the Order of the Elephant of Denmark. In 1656 he was sent ambassador to the King of Por- fugal, and in the following year, to the court of Den- mark. At the treaty of Roschild he was appointed mediator between Denmark and Sweden, and to the latter court he was subsequently accredited amebas- sadder. Sir Phillip m. in April 1661, Constance, se- cond ad. and co-heir of Francis Lucy, Esq. of West- minster, by whom he left, at his decease, 16 Feb. 1718, with three dais., a son and successor,

Sir Phillip Meadows, also knight marshall of the palace, who d. at Brompton, 5 Dec. 1757, leaving by his wife, Dorothy, sister of Hugh, first Viscount Falmouth, three sons and five dais., of whom the third son,

Phillip Meadows, Esq., b. at Vienna in 1708, m. Frances, only daughter of William Pierrepont, Viscount Newark, and sister and heir of Evelyn, second Duke of Kingston, by whom he left at his decease, in 1781, with other issue, a son, Charles Meadows, Esq., who assumed, upon inheriting the Kingston estates, the surname of Pierrepont only, and was elevated to the peerage, in 1796, as Vis-
