About William Northam
NZBDM: 1903/3698
Colonist, Volume XLVI, Issue 10677, 27 March 1903: DEATH OF MR NORTHAM.
Mr W. Northam, whose death occurred on Wednesday last, was wellknown and highly esteemed throughout the Nelson district. He came to Nelson in the Sir Charles Forbes in August, 1842. He took an active part in exploring and surveying the West Coast districts with the late Mr James Burnett. He was also one of the first to get the Whangamoa Valley opened up. He was a member of the Road Board in the Wakapuaka district for a great many years, and also served a term on the Nelson Licensing Committee, and was a member of the Bowling Club. Throughout he took a great interest in any undertaking to promote the welfare of the district, and will be greatly missed by the people of Wakapuaka, where he had made his home, for his genial, open-hearted disposition made him beloved by all, and much sympathy is expressed with his sorrowing widow. Mr Northam's father, Mr W, Northam, senior, was one of the ill-fated victims of the Wairau massacre, and Mr Northam was a stepson of the late Mr Thomas Dodson, senior, of Wakapuaka, Messrs George and Arthur Dodson being his stepbrothers. Mrs George Frost is his sister, and Mrs Walter Frost, Mrs D. Barnett and Miss Dodson are stepsisters.
