Katherine was born in Tyrone, Iowa in 1881. She married William O’Brien in about 1899 or 1900. He was killed in a railroad accident before their first son was born. My dad was just riding along with him as they were switching coal cars down to the mines near Oskaloosa. Uncle Bill was setting the hand break on top of the car when the nut holding the break wheel came off and he lost his balance and fell down between the cars. My dad started railroading about 10 years later after seeing this, as a brakeman also, he told me that he never set a hand break before checking to see that the nut on the wheel was tight.
