William Edward Oates

William Edward Oates, 66, of Delavan, Ill., died at 4:55 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at Hopedale Medical Complex. He was born March 31, 1942, in Muhlenberg County, the oldest child of Birkley and Arna Rose Oates. After graduating from Graham High School in 1960, he attended Western Kentucky University, where he received B.S. and M.S. degrees. On Oct. 23, 1976, he married Nancy Jeckel Graham in Kolding, Denmark. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Heather (Steven) Wheeler of Danville and Kate (Dustin) Smucker-Oates of Delavan; his mother; sister, Jeanie Barnett; and brother, Russell (Phyllis) Oates, the latter all of Madisonville. His father preceded him in death.

For several years William was employed by the Department of Defense overseas dependents school system, working as a teacher and later as an administrator in schools in Germany, Italy and Turkey. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he coached basketball, football and soccer, and he was an accomplished skier and tennis player. After relocating to Delavan in 1979, William became the proprietor of Jeckel Plumbing and Heating. In 1990, he established Oates Technical Services and pioneered geothermal heating and cooling throughout central Illinois.

William witnessed to his Christian faith as a Sunday school teacher and Bible study leader. He served his country as an Army officer. During his 29 years in his adopted hometown, William worked in many capacities to promote the betterment of the community. He was a trusted and loyal family member and friend. In essence, William Oates strove to live a life of integrity and service.

He was a member of Delavan First Presbyterian Church. There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Unity Cemetery in Graham. Garys Funeral Home in Greenville is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Williams church, Hopedale Medical Foundation or Unity Cemetery.
