Notes:  “Some Frontier Families.”  William served with the 42nd (Royal Highlanders) Regiment.  He arrived in Grahamstown in 1816., after having fought at Waterloo, he came to the Cape with Lord Charles Somerset.  DN 271/1834.  Children:

By first wife: William (1820-75) m. in 1842 Margaret, dau. of Capt. Charles Dixon. (2 sons 2 dau.) Ann Mary m. 1) Philip Norton, q.v. (1820-47) 4 sons m. 2) Joseph Nourse R.N. (q.v.) 4 sons 3 dau. Harriet Jane b. 1823 m. 1) W. P. R. Dixon m. 2) John Ayton, 2 sons 2 dau. James Henry (1825-1909) m. Anne, sister of Sir Walter Currie (one son William Cole Currie Ogilvie, who had 3 sons 2 dau.) Emily b. 1827 m. 1854 Edwad Lister Green, Lt. 26th Regt. They went to New Zealand John Clarke (1829-1902) m. Mary Ayton (1838-76), 4 sons 3 dau. Caroline b. 1831 m. Henry Richards and lived in London. Alfred, b. 1831, m. Elizabeth (1838-1909), daughter of Henry Lovemore (q.v.). He had five children: Gordon, Graham, Alfred, Ella, and Rosalie.

By 2nd wife Eliza : Fanny m. Wm. Richards, lived in Birmingham (had issue) Elouisa m. Wm. Shipley,Lt. afterwards General in the British Army, lived in Devon. Jane m. Capt. Smith, transferred to India, both died there, no family.

He is buried in the Woltemade cemetery in Cape Town, having been moved there from the old St George's cemetery, Somerset Road, Cape Town in 1926.

Family tradition says that he was a member of the 42nd Highlanders (later the 1st battalion of the Black Watch) and that the family came from Banff, in Scotland. The I.G.I. has an entry for a William Ogilvie, son of William and Elspet (nee Wilson), born in Banff, Banffshire on 6 June 1795.
