WILLIAM ALEXANDER OLIVER-RUTHERFURD (1818-1888), born at Knowsouth June 30, 1818 (Jed. Reg.), matriculated at Jesus ColI., Cambridge, in 1838, and was Major in the Militia. He succeeded to Edgerston 1879 and d. Nov. 3, 1888. He m. twice, first in 1861 (JC 1862) Margaret Jane (d. Sept. 7, 1869) dau. of his cousin Edward Young; secondly Nov. 27,1872 Mary Anne (d. Edgerston May 8, 1875) dau. of W.H. Breakspear of Deanfield, Oxon.

By his first wife he had: WILLIAM EDWARD, born Aug. 8, 1863, Lieut. 3rd Bn. King's Own Scottish Borderers, joined the Jedforest Club 1885. He sold Edgerston in 1915 to Frederic Scott Oliver (not related) and emigrated to Kenya, so ending a family tenure of nearly 500 years. He was shown as living in Burke's Armorial families 1925 ed., and the date of his death has not been ascertained. He m. April 29, 1891 Nancy dau. of Gideon Pott of Dod and Knowsouth and had an only child:

a. WILLIAM ALEXANDER, born July 13, 1892, educated at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, Capt. K.O.S.B., also lived in Kenya and visited Edgerston c. 1960. He is believed to have married and had a daughter (comm. from Mark Oliver).

William Alexander Oliver-Rutherfurd (1818-1888) Born at Knowsouth June 30, 1818. He matriculated at Jesus Coll, Cambridge in 1838. He succeeded to Edgerston in 1879. He married 1st , in 1861, Margaret Jane Young daughter of his cousin Edward Young. He married 2nd , in 1872, Mary Ann Brakspear daughter of his cousin Ann Elizabeth Young and William Henry Brakspear of Henley, Oxford, England. William Alexander Oliver-Rutherfurd is the second cousin of both of his wives. His wives were first cousins. The common ancestor of these three cousins is William Oliver and Jane Rutherford.

--- The eldest surviving son William Alexander Oliver-Rutherfurd succeeded his father in 1879. He was born at Knowesouth in 1818 and therefore was sixty one years of age on his succession. He served for a number of years in the militia and retired with the rank of major. …………… Mr Rutherfurd married Margaret Jane his cousin daughter of Edward Young whose mother was Elizabeth Oliver. By her he had two sons and one surviving daughter, viz William Edward born 1863 Archibald Aymer born 1867 and Meta Isabella.

Mr Oliver-Rutherfurd married secondly Mary Anne daughter of WH Brakespear of Deanfield county of Oxford and by her had two children; Malcolm and Agnes. He died in 1888. William Edward Oliver-Rutherfurd of Edgerston succeeded his father. He served in the militia for some years and married in 1891 Nancy youngest daughter of Gideon Pott of Dod and has a son. On the same day that Mr Oliver Rutherfurd married and in the same church were also married the elder daughter of Mr Pott and Mr Isaac Bayley, the double ceremony was performed by the Rev Mr Fisher the parish minister of Jedburgh.
