William and Rebecca had two sons, Alexander Boyd Hay, born 1871 and William Bunyon Hay, born 1874, both in Marshall County, TN. William's parents and siblings had removed to Calloway County, KY In 1869. William remained in Marshall County until the death or departure of Rebecca Howard, then rejoined his family in KY. In 1879, he married Tabitha Angeline Skaggs and had issue of one daughter, Mavis Monroe Hay, born 19 September 1883, who later married Uloth Uriah ("Wiley") Utterback.
