This Lancelot Threlkeld knight was son of Sir Lancelot by Margaret daughter and heir of Henry Bromflett lord Vescy, widow of the aforesaid John de Clifford.

This Sir Lancelot the son was:wont to fay, he had three noble houses; one for pleasure, Crolby in Westmorland, where he had a park full of deer; one for profit and warmth, wherein to reside in winter, namely, Yanwith nigh Penrith ; and the third, Threlkeld, well stocked with tenants to go with him to the wars.

He had three daughters coheirs; one married to Thomas Dudley, with whom he had Yanwith; the other two were married to two brothers, Pickerings, younger fons of Sir James. Pickering of Killington in Westmorland. One of ihese two brothers with his wife had Threlkeld; the other brother, viz. James, had, with Eliznbeth the eldest fister, Crosby Ravensworth.

The arms of Threlkeld differed only in colour from those of Hastings; being, Argent, a manch Gules. · In a feodary of Henry earl of Cumberland, in the 18 Hen. 8. it appears, that James Pickering' esquire, as in the righr of Elizabeth his wife, one of the daughters and coheirs of Lancelot Threlkeld knight, held of the said earl the manor of Crosby Ravyoswath, by the cornage of 1357d, owing also to the faid earl for the same wardship, marriage, relief, and suit to the county court.

James was succeeded by his son William Pickering esquire ; who in the 23 Hen. 8. was an arbitrator, together with Thomas Dudley of Yanwith and Christopher Threlkeld of Melmerby esquires, in a cause between Guy and Hugh Machel of Crackenthorp.

The laid William had a son Lancelut, who about the 10 Eliz. married a daughter of Thomas Blenkinsop. of Helbeck, esquire. He appears to have been living in the 41 Eliz, and was succeeded by his son and heir, viz.

Tbomas Pickering of Crosby esquire; who in the reign of king James the first sold the manor and part of the demesne to Sir John Lowther of Lowther knight.

The arms of Pickering were; Ermine, a lion rampant Azure, crowned Or.

Over the door the Pickering arms are displayed with eight quarterings and supporters. From the last of the Pickerings the manor was purchased by Sir John Lowther who gave it as a marriage portion to his daughter Frances and John Dodsworth. They are known to have been in residence here in 1682 and to have made repairs to the building.
