Marriage: Stories abound that Arminella was an English noblewoman living in Ireland and that couple eloped due to parental objections to marriage; no proof has ever been found to substantiate this; other stories say that he was a widower when he arrived in America with sons Lawrence and John and Arminella was a second wife. It has now been confirmed that she was the daughter of Lawrence Whiteside of County Antrim, Ireland.

It is not yet certain how William Ross came to own Fairfaxes Lot 55 & 56. Lot 55 was originally leased to FRANCIS ROSS on August 5, 1749. Francis also leased Lot 54; JAMES ROSS leased Lots 45 and 46. How William, James and Francis were related is not yet known. ...

"William Ross I (ca 1702, Dublin) mar. Arminella Whiteside(s) (ca 1706-7 England - nobility?). William is believed to have moved to England about 1722. It is unknown whether his 2 older sons were born in England or America. Came to America prior to 1749 when he obtained 456 acres from Lord Fairfax on south branch of the Potomac River. William and sons supplied Ft. Cumberland with fresh produce and meat. He was burned at stake by Indians; will probated 1758. All sons served the cause for Independence, and their descendants are eligible to join the DAR."

EARLY RECORDS OF HAMPSHIRE COUNTY VIRGINIA note that Arminella was the second wife of William Ross. The first wife unkown. The information provided on marriage dates and places for the Whiteside line were from Don Whiteside, PhD - letter of April 17, 1984. He makes no mention of a first marriage for William. Dr. Whiteside did extensive research in Ireland for his data.

The Ross men are reported to have supplied Fort Cumberland with fresh produce and meat. Cresap accused William of stealing some silver and iron utensils that he buried during an Indian uprising. William was also accused of stealing some of Cresap's cattle. William and his sons were brought to the authorities. They were soon released. On 01 March 1757, Adam Stevens wrote to General Dagworthy that William and the sons supplied meat, butter, and other produce. He wrote that they "behaved honestly ... and have been very serviceable to the garrison."

William's Will is copied here. It was handwritten 11 March 1754 on a small piece of paper that has been preserved by the family.

William, Jr. and Tavenor were reported captured by Indians in the fall of 1757. William Sr. was burned at the stake, and Tavenor carried off. This was during the French and Indian War. William's will was probated on 11 September 1759, by Armenella, executrix, and proved by oath of George Hoge, one of the witnesses. On 30 April 1782 an indenture between Arminella Ross, widow of William Ross, dec'd of the County of Hampshire, and Lawrence Ross, son of William, was recorded. Lawrence paid one hundred pounds for the purchase of the farm land, four hundred and fifty six acres. Arminella signed by her mark. William and Winyfrit [Winifred] Ross signed by their marks. This deed was proven on 13 August 1782.

From what I can tell most accounts of the children of William Ross and Arminella Whiteside, apart from Elizabeth Ross Enochs, give them as migrating to Brownsville on the border of Fayette and Greene County, Pennsylvania around the time of the Revolution, and from there going to the Mason County, Kentucky area shortly thereafter. I don't think I have seen any indication that they followed the migration route of the Morris, Enochs and Archers families into Ohio County, WV and the Noble County, Ohio area.
