The Question of Identity

William Ruthven, here treated, is the son of William, Lord Ruthven, and his wife Jonet Haliburton. The Scots Peerage IV: 260

With his brothers James, Henry, and Alexander, William Ruthven, here treated, was one of the heirs in remainder identified in a charter dated 10 June 1540 by which James V, King of Scots, confirmed that he had given various lands to William Ruthven of Ballandane. RMS: charter number 2169 on p. 491

William Ruthven, here treated, is not mentioned in the list of heirs in remainder who are identified in the charter by which Jonet Haliburton, wife of William, Lord Ruthven, confirmed that she had given the lands of Ballindane in the barony of Ballegirnoch and sheriffdom of Perth to William Ruthven of Ballindane. William already possessed the lands of Ballindane but he had resigned them into the hands of the superior, Jonet Haliburton, in order to obtain a new grant which included his heirs in remainder. RMS: charter number 2913 on pp. 682-83

Death

A date and place of death has not been identified for William Ruthven, here treated. He was alive on 10 June 1540, when he and his brothers James, Henry and Alexander, were named as heirs in remainder to William Ruthven of Ballindean, but because he is not mentioned in William Ruthven of Ballandane's second charter, dated 8 May 1543, it has been suggested that: "he was probably dead" before this date. The Scots Peerage IV: 260
