About William Shopland

The family moved from Beaford to St. Teath, Cornwall between 1847-1849. They lived in St. Teath where William worked in the mines before moving south to Tywardreath between 1851-1854. They lived there for the rest of their lives.

“ Alleged Encroachment on the Highway - At Tywardreath petty sessions, on Monday, before Sir Colman Rashleigh, Bart., the Rev. Dr. Treffry, and Nevil NOrway, Esq., William Shopland, a cripple, in receipt of parish releif, was charged by Mr. Thorpe, district highway surveyor, with encroaching on the highway at Polmear, Tywardreath. Mr. Mannel, the steward at Tywardreath of J.F. Basset, Esq., of Tehidy, informed the Bench that the spot in question being waste, and, as he considered, a part of his farm, he had given the defendant permission to cultivate the wastrel. Mr. Thorpe stated the nearest point of the encroachment from the centre of the highway was 13 feet. Defendant agreed to put his hedge 15 feet from the centre of the road. Mr. Mannel paid the costs.” Royal Cornwall Gazette, Friday February 24, 1865. (wastrel - waste or common land)

William won a prize in the Tywardreath Rural Acricultural Society show in 1870; the paper does not say for what. In 1874, Mary recieved second place for her parnips at the St. Austell Cottage Garden Society
