About William Storey Bridekirk
Sailed on the "Gertrude" from Gravesend, England, arrived Table Bay, Cape, South Africa on 30 July 1817.
William Storey Bridekirk, whose firm at '31, Heeregracht,' printed The Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette at this time, was born in County Durham and arrived in Table Bay in 1817, already trained as a printer. For some years, he served as a compositor in the Government printing office, resigning in 1824 to found his own establishment. He was responsible for the printing of a number of important publications, including Suasso de Lima's Geschiedenis van de Kaap de Goede Hoop (1825), which was the first history of the Cape, published at the Cape. He also took a leading role in the fight for a free colonial press in the 1820s.
