William Tatton was baptized on 15 September 1581 at Northenden, son of Robert Tatton of Withenshaw, esq, and his wife, Eleanor, the third daughter of John Warren, of Poynton, esq. William Tatton of Withenshaw, esq, died 8 January 1616 and was buried at Northenden.
Heir to his grandfather William Tatton, Esq.
William married Katherine, the oldest daughter of sir George Leycester of Toft, knight, at Northenden on 19 February, 1602. After his death, his widow Katherine married the rev W Nicholls.

William Tatton, who succeeded to Wythenshawe during his father's lifetime, in or!before 1616,8 did not enjoy his possessions long. He was unfortunately drowned in the'river Mersey in January, 1616-17, in the thirty-second year of his age, as thus feelingly recorded in the Parish Register :
"Januarie, 1616. Upon the viijth daye of this month did befall the most lamentable accident upon the "Right worshipfull William Tatton of Withinshawe, Esquiere, who was drowned in the River of mercie, betweene "the haven and the milne weare at Northerden, betwixt the houres of vij and viij a clocke at night, and his bodie "was founde upon the xiiijHl daye of the same month beneth the weare, about ij a clocke in the afternoone, and "was buried upon the xvth daye of the same month, about iiij a clocke in the afternoone."
By his wife Katherine, the eldest daughter of Sir George Leycester of Toft (to whom he was married at Northenden, Feb. 19, 1602-3),1'he left an only son and heir, Robert Tatton, then nearly 11 years of age, and three daughters. On Jan. 27, 1628-9, Katherine Tatton remarried the Rev. William Nicholls or Nicolls, D.D., Rector of Cheadle, and died Jan. 13, 1665-6.' William Tatton's Inquisition post mortem was taken in 1619, and is now in the Record Office. It is of extraordinary length, occupying no less than fifty-five skins of parchment!
Robert Tatton, who was a minor at the time of his father's death, became a ward of the King, Charles I. On January 9, 1628-9, he was married at Bowdon to Anne, the third daughter of William Brereton of Ashley, Esq., and ultimately one of the three coheiresses of her brother, Thomas Brereton of Ashley, Esq.j

The key part of this is that William [Stubbs] accuses both Robert [Tatton] and his son and heir of contriving together to settle an inheritance from his father only on his eldest [unnamed] son, with no provision for Susan or their children.
