William Tatton, who succeeded to Wythenshawe during his father's lifetime, in or!before 1616,8 did not enjoy his possessions long. He was unfortunately drowned in the'river Mersey in January, 1616-17, in the thirty-second year of his age, as thus feelingly recorded in the Parish Register :

By his wife Katherine, the eldest daughter of Sir George Leycester of Toft (to whom he was married at Northenden, Feb. 19, 1602-3),1'he left an only son and heir, Robert Tatton, then nearly 11 years of age, and three daughters. On Jan. 27, 1628-9, Katherine Tatton remarried the Rev. William Nicholls or Nicolls, D.D., Rector of Cheadle, and died Jan. 13, 1665-6.' On January 9, 1628-9, he was married at Bowdon to Anne, the third daughter of William Brereton of Ashley, Esq., and ultimately one of the three coheiresses of her brother, Thomas Brereton of Ashley, Esq.j

The key part of this is that William [Stubbs] accuses both Robert [Tatton] and his son and heir of contriving together to settle an inheritance from his father only on his eldest [unnamed] son, with no provision for Susan or their children.
