William James Temple was born in Albany in 1842. He was educated at boarding schools in Kinderhook & Geneva, and at New Haven, CT. Temple went on to study law at Yale and Harvard, but left Harvard in 1861 to enlist in the 17th US Infantry Regiment. He was commissioned in 1861 as a Captain. Temple was killed in action on May 1, 1863 at the Battle of Chancellorsville, shot through the heart. He was promoted posthumously to Brevet Major for gallant and meritorious service. He was buried at Albany Rural Cemetery on May 25, 1863. CPT TEMPLE's middle name, James, is his mother's maiden name (Catherine Margaret James).
