David and Joanna, (maiden name unknown) Thomas lived in Salem, MA. where their son, William Thomas Sr. was born, circa 1665. The Thomas family moved to Middleboro, MA. following the sale of their property at Salem in 1668. William Thomas lived at Middleboro for several years. He took the oath of a free man, at Middleboro,1688.
William Thomas visited Salem, MA. during the Salem witchcraft trials, (1692-1693). Over 200 people were accused of witchcraft, including William. Of the dozens of people, who were arrested, few were cleared of charges. Twenty of the accused were executed, and a few escaped. Of those who were arrested with William, all were executed, except for William, who escaped, and fled to Middleboro, MA.
Middleboro town council voted to accept William as a town citizen June 11, 1695.
Wm. Thomas married: 1) Sarah Pratt, 30 July 1691, Taunton, MA., by whom he had six children at Middleboro: Joanna b.10 May 1693, Susanna b. 15 Feb. 1694/9, Sarah b. 6 Dec. 1696, Elizabeth b. 27 Oct. 1698 - d. Sept. 1703 in 5th yr., William b. 18 Mar. 1699/1700, Mary b. 4 Dec. 1701.
Wm. Thomas married: 2) Sarah Barden 28 Feb. 1704/5, by whom he had at Middleboro: David, Lois, Eunice, Jabez, Israel, Betty, Ephraim and Elisha.
William Thomas died at Salem, MA. 5 April 1734, in his 70th year.
Middleborough, Massachusetts has had many names. Middleborough is its modern name. In the colonial period, 1600's and 1700's the town was known as Middleboro.
