Husband's General Notes

Burial: Church at Essenden, Hertfordshire, England

On a brass plaque inside the Church at Essenden, Hertfordshire, England is found the following inscription:

"Here lieth buried the bodies of William Tooke, late of Popes in the Countie of Hertf Esquier Auditor of the Court of Wards and Liveries and of Ales his wife one of the daughters of Robert Barlee late of Bibbesworth in the said Countie Esquire who were married together 56 years and has issue between them nyne sons and three daughters and after he had ben officer of said Courte by the space of 44 years, he died 4th daie of December, anno D'ni 1588 and in the 31 yeare of the reigne of Queen Elizabeth, when he was of age of fowerscore yeares, and the said Ales died the ____ daie of in the ____ yeare of our Lorde."

Above the plaque is a Shield with a Crest of Arms:

Per Chevron sable and argent three giffins heads erased countercharged. Crest: A griffins head erased per chevron sable and argent holding in its mouth by the middle of the blade a Sword erect.

Regarding the Church in Essenden, Hertfordshire, England

"Here lyeth interred the body of William Took, Gentleman, sometime of Hertford and Lord of the Manor second son of William Took of Popes, Esquire, and of Mary his wife which was the daughter of Nicholas Tychbourne, Gentleman, sometime of Royden in the County of Essex, which William deceased the 12 day of February 1611 and Mary the 29th day of August 1623.

The body of Ralph Tooke, eldest sonne of Walter Tooke. eldest son of William Tooke (all of Popes, Parish of Bishopp's Hatfield, ) Esq. beinge aged about 77 years deceasing the 22 of December 1635, lyeth heere interred expecting a happie resurrection.

Here lyeth the body of Christopher Took, Gentleman, fourth son of William Took, late of Hertford, in the County of Hertford, Esq. deceased which Christopher Took dyed a batchelour on the 19th day of August 1630 in the 58th year of his age.

Sacred to the memory of Mrs. Jane Tooke, late wife of Ralph Tooke of Essenden Bury in the County of Hartford, esq. and daughter of Edward Bysh of Smallfield in the County of Surry, Esq. who departed this life the Eighth day of December Anno Dom. 1648.

Here lye the bodies of James Tooke, of Hertford, in the County of Hertford Esq. late one of the Auditors of Court of Wards and Liveryes and of Dorothy his wife who had twenty children whereof John, Edward, Christopher, Mary, Charles, Ralph, and Philip are living.

The said ( James ) (21st) ( Dorothy) dyed (28th) of November Anno Dom 1655.

Here resteth the bodies of Henry Darnall of Bird's Place in this Parish, Esq. Councellor at Law, of Gray's Inn and of Marie his wife daughter of William Tooke Esq. second son of WilliamTooke."

Testator: William Tooke of Hertford, Herts, gent.

Burial request: in the chancel of Essendon, Herts, near to the place where his father and mother are buried.

Bequests: To the poor of the parish of Essendon, 5 marks. To the poor of the parish of All Saints, Hertford, 40s. To the poor of the parish of St Andrew, Hertford, 20s. Mary Tooke (wife). Christopher Tooke (second son). Nicholas Tooke (third son). Mentions a house on Butchery Greene.

Executors: Mary Tooke (wife); Henry Darnall, gent (son in law); Edward Pulter of Ayott St Lawrence, Herts, gent (kinsman); Christopher Tooke, Nicholas Tooke and James Tooke (younger sons).

Witnesses: John Woode, John Finch and William Goldstone.

Proved at Wheathampstead on 26 Feb 1611/12 by Mary Tooke.
