William Walker

In “Bailey-Britton History and Genealogy” by T. H. Bailey of Kingsport, Tennessee (1962) there is the following statement: “In May 21, 1660*, he (Stephen Bailey) married in Northumberland County, Ann, widow of William Walker…..” The noted asterisk is “Entry by William Jeffers May 21, 1660”.

As to Walker, there is a very close family relationship over several generations. William Walker married Mary Jefers, b. 1632, widow of Sharpe. He died in c. 1656 and she married Stephen Bailey. The May 21, 1660 date is wrong. That was the date of a Northumberland Co. court hearing involving Stephen and young William Walker. They were married before then.

Walker's will and court documents make quite clear that the name was Mary, not Ann nor Mary Ann. William's son, William (II) sold Stephen Bailey land near Kinsale in 1672. He was raised by Stephen and Mary. In addition there was another son of William (I) Walker also named William who was the son of Mary Jefers. He owned land on which Stephen and Mary lived (her life estate) prior to 1672.
