William WARE was convicted at Middlesex Gaol, London on 17 May 1842 for stealing a saw. Gaol report: “previously convicted”. 14 yrs transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship ‘York’ arriving there 29 Dec 1832.

Aged stated as 17yrs at court, but 21 yrs on arrival in Colony; single man; carpenter (rough/not fully qualified); dark complexion; black hair; Hazel eyes.

Colony of VDL: Assigned to work. 1833: Refusing to work and threatening his Overseer. 50 lashes. Several other records of misconduct. 22 May 1839: Ticket of Leave granted. 1846: Free Certificate. no. 600, issued.

(N.B. There are several other persons named William Ware transported to VDL abt the same time, but only one appears to have travelled by the ship ‘York’.)
