About William de Massey

Ormerod's history of the Massey family in The Bucklow Hundred: Massey of Tatton begins with a William Massey who is the younger brother of Hamon Massy, baron of Dunham-Massy (which generation not given). As his son (William II b. ca. 1189) is stated to have died ca. 1270, it seems that this William may be the brother of Hamon Massy IV. Ormerods history of the Massey family of Tatton states that this William I had a son William II, who married Margery de Rosthorne, not this William. If this William I participated in the Third Crusade,. his son must have been born no later than 1189. This would fit with The Third Crusade, which corresponds his brother Hamon V's lifetime. The Third Crusade, that of Richard Lionheart, was from 1189-1192. The Fourth Crusade was 1202-1204, and he most likely would have died in Constantinople (or on the way to or back from), not Palestine. Would like to see a source for his Crusading efforts. - https://books.google.com/books?id=DYY1AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA441&lpg=PA441&d...

The Ninth Crusade (1271 - 1272) was also incited by the misfortunes that, towards the close of the thirteenth century, befell the Christian kingdom in Palestine. The leader of this crusade was Prince Edward of England, afterwards King Edward I. The English prince, was, however, more fortunate than the ill-fated King Louis IX. Edward succeeded in capturing Nazareth, and in compelling the sultan of Egypt to agree to a treaty favorable to the Christians in the Last Crusade .
