According to Burkes Geneology and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry, Published in 1939, the Stokes Family is derived from the Stokeses of Essex England and emanate from Ranulf de Praers(Preaux) Lord of the village of Stoke during the eleventh century. Ranulf was apparently one of the original Norman Invaders/Settlers of Britain. There is substantial evidence that Ranulf was the founder of this ancient house which has spread from England to Ireland and America.
