Son of geologist, insurance salesman, professor, RLDS church historian, et al, Herbert. Son of Leona, housewife. Grandson of Don Carlos, Civil War veteran, farmer. greatgrandson of Catherine Smith Salisbury, sister of Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith Jr. Father of Winfield Jr, Sylvia, Richard William Alan, and Johanna April Salisbury.

Trained as engineer and physicist, added astronomy, and was always inventor. Worked in England as electronic warfare specialist, especially on jamming German radar. Worked for many companies through the years as a research scientist.
