Winifred Stead

Winifred Stone was born on the 23rd of November, 1914 in Hull, England. She was the first born child of 5 known children of her parents Cecil Kay Christie Stone and his wife Mary (born Hemingway). She died on the 5th of January, 2009 in Amanzimtoti.

Winifred married George Edward Phillip Stead on the 7th of December, 1935 in Pietermaritzburg, Natal.He was born on the 3rd of June, 1915 in Ladysmith, Natal. Her first son Arthur was born prematurely a mere 4 days later. With no access to incubators, it was unlikely Arthur would survive. Winifred however pulled him through, even lining a shoebox with cotton wool and placing it in the warmer drawer of their oven with Arthur inside it to provide him a warm place to sleep. Thankfully he survived and Winifred and George went on to have alltogether Four known children.
