About Yevelov FISHELOV

GEDCOM Note

Entered military service in 1875

During his lifetime, 1860s, Rabbi Elazar Moshe Hurwitz, was the Rav of Pinsk.

Nuchem Dave died ~1920? (The names of immigrants’ parents were often Americanized even if they never immigrated.) Their 5 children were born between 1886 and 1907. By 1920 my grandfather, Joseph, was in his mid-30s, and even the youngest, Uncle Ben, was in his mid-teens. I'm sure the family helped each other as much as they could, a tradition I remember my Dad carrying on. In 1921 Joseph sent a ticket for Aunt Pauline, and in 1923 he brought Uncle Ben and Chaia Ruchel (Ida) to the U.S. [Source: interview with Ben & Pauline]

Possibly other family members from Minsknow (sp?) and Horodok (Horodno? see Azri's letter of 4/84 for alternate spellings. 5 children born in Pinsk, in Minsk Gubernia (first Russia, then Poland after WWI, then Russia again after WWII).

His tombstone, per Moshe 12/14: Maybe they are not a common pattern, but certainly very similar. It starts with "פ" and "נ" which means: Here Buried (The Magen David Symbol is not there) Rabbi Chaim son of Nachum husband of (his wife name is completely corrupted and actually it looks as if in that place the stone was broken and fixed back) and then the Hebrew date of his death and at the end again the Jewish phrase "May his soul be bound in the bond of life.” Because now-a-days there is such a big variety of what people are writing, therefore I consider it as a "common pattern.”

ALL MEMBERS OF THIS FAMILY WERE APPARENTLY KILLED BY THE NAZIS: Uncle Zorach married Peshe, and had 2 sons and 2 daughters: Zaydel - played violin. Killed by Polish in Easter incident in 1919 related to newspaper photo...story recorded on taped interview with Uncle Ben and Aunt Pauline. Shleimele Shana Chaia Aydel

Aunt Pauline and Uncle Ben said that Nuchem Dave was born in a town/shtetl called "Kachanovich" in Yiddish. Before the beginning of World War II, 55% of the town's inhabitants had been Jews. Renee blogged "My father told me often that his father, who died many years before my birth, was born in a shtetl along its (Pripet/Pripyat*) river bank." During the war they were almost all killed in Treblinka concentration camp.

  • Pripyat River, a river rising in the NW Ukraine and flowing northeast into Belarus across the Pripet Marshes (the largest swamp in Europe), then east into the Dnieper River. The river is about 708 km (440 mi) long, in northern Ukraine, flowing generally eastward through the Pripet Marshes, a forested, swampy area, to the Dnieper River north of Kiev. Notably, it runs through the area of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and near Pripyat, Ukraine (deserted since the disaster in April 1986). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinsk_Marshes

Another town, Ciechanowiec is a small town in Wysoczyzna Drohiczyńska, Gmina Ciechanowiec, Wysokie Mazowieckie County, Podlaskie Voivodeship, Poland. Alternate names used in the past or currently include Tshekhanovits Yiddish, Tsekhanovets Russian, Chechanovitz, Chekhanovits, Chekhanovitse, Rudelstadt and Tsikhanovits. Jewish family names like Ciechanowiec, Ciechanowiecki, Ciechanowicz, Ciechanowski originate from this town. http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Ciechanowiec
