Obituary of Zachariah West The Spanish Fork Press October 04, 1906

GOOD CITIZEN GONE

On Sept 27 Zachariah West of our city passed to the great beyond. His remains were buried from the Third ward meeting house Sunday last. His funeral was largely attended by our best citizens. The speakers were, Bishop Don C. Markham of Leland and ex-Bishop Marinus Larsen of this city; both spoke in eulogistic term of the life and character of the deceased. Mr. West was born in the state of North Carolina, Feb. 8, 1841, in which state he spent his early manhood. When the Civil War broke out he joined the Confederate side fighting as he believed "for home and fireside." He was taken prisoner by the Union Army but was later paroled by taking the oath of allegiance to the U. S. Government with a number of others came west. In 1866 he came to Utah and in 1868 he married Mary Youd by whom he had 12 children, 8 of whom survive him with his widow. Mr. West was a man of sterling character who by his industry and economy secured a competency. It may be truthfully said of him, he was an honest man, a peaceful neighbor and an industrious citizen. He was a great sufferer during the last three years of his life. Rest in peace. G. A. H.

Mrs. West and family wish to thank neighbors and friends for the many acts of kindness during the sickness and death of husband and father.
