Elizabeth Pearson White, John Howland of the Mayflower, volume 4: The First Five Generations Documented Descendants Through his fourth child Elizabeth Howland, Wife of Ephraim Hicks and Captain John Dickinson; Rockland, ME: Picton Press, 2008, pp. 72-74.

16. Zebulon Dickinson (Joseph (3), Elizabeth (2) [Howland] [Hicks] Dickinson, John (1) Howland) was born in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York, about 1680 (1), the son of Joseph and Rose (Townsend) Dickinson. Zebulon died in Oyster Bay between September 1751, the date he made his will, and 3 December 1751, the date his will was proved in Jamaica, Queens Co., N.Y. (2)

Zebulon may have married first, in Oyster Bay, in 1701, Mary Frost (3), who was born in 1685 (4), the daughter of William and Rebecca (Wright) Frost. Mary died in Oyster Bay in 1720. (5)

Zebulon Dickinson married second, in Flushing, N.Y., Rose Townsend (6), who was born in Oyster Bay 12 November 1708 (7), daughter of Justice John and Rosannah (Wright) Townsend. Rose died before 10 September 1747, the date Zebulon married his third wife. (8)

Zebulon Dickinson married third, in Flushing, N.Y., 7 mo. 10, 1747 Mary Doughty (9), who was born in Flushing, Queens Co., Long Island, N.Y., (10) the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Jackson) Doughty. Mary died before 11 February 1756, the date her stepsons sold property they had inherited from their father, which was to come into their possession after the death or remarriage of their stepmother. (11)

Zebulon's father, Joseph Dickinson, Sr., of Oyster Bay, gentleman, in consideration of the sum of £20 paid by "my son, Zebulon Dickinson, yeoman, and for many other good causes," conveyed to Zebulon, 5 March 1719/20, a parcel of land at Cedar Swamp in Oyster Bay, east of the main highway, excepting 6 acres of land at the East end which Joseph, Sr., had conveyed to his son, Joseph, Jr., together with 204 acres lying on the east side of the highway from Musketo Cove to Lusum, reserving the use of the property to himself and his wife during their natural lives and during the widowhood of his wife, Rose. This deed was witnessed by John Wood and George Townsend, and was acknowledged by Joseph Dickinson the same day (12).

On 25 May 1726, Zebulon's brother, Henry Dickinson, requested James Townsend to resurvey a piece of land in the Old Purchase of Oyster Bay which had formerly belonged to Henry's father, Joseph Dickinson, deceased, and which Joseph had given to Henry Dickinson, who had conveyed it to his brother, Zebulon Dickinson. (13)

Zebulon Dickinson was town clerk in Oyster Bay in 1715, assessor in 1728, 1731 and in 1733-37, highway commissioner and fence-viewer, 1728-1732, and overseer of highways, 1733-37. (14) On 5 June 1731, Zebulon Dickinson was one of twenty-one subscribers who ordered Samuel Underhill, town clerk, to enter into Oyster Bay town records a copy of a survey of 26 acres of land which had been laid out to Lydia Wright, and which had originally been surveyed by Thomas Townsend and Nathaniel Coles, dated 9 September 1682, and which had been cut out or defaced from the original record. (15) On 10 October 1735 Zebulon gave part of his farm to Cedar Swamp for a burying ground for his family and friends. Witnesses were Samuel Underhill, Jr., and Abraham Underhill. (16)

Zebulon's childless brother, Henry Dickinson of Oyster Bay, died before 2 May 1733. In his will dated 31 March 1733, Henry gave Zebulon "half of all my other lands lying in the Old Purchase of Oyster Bay," after the death of his wife, Phebe. He named Zebulon as a joint executor of his estate, to act with his wife, Phebe. (17) On 20 February 1735, Zebulon Dickinson sold to his brother-in-law, Penn Townsend of Oyster Bay, the brother of his second wife, for £60, a 5 acres lot known as "the French Lott." Witnesses were John Place and William Hawxhurst. This deed was acknowledged 1 April 1735. (18)

Zebulon Dickinson of Oyster Bay, in his will dated 29, 7 mo. 1751, proved 3 December 1751, named his third wife, Mary, and gave her the use of his Negro girl, Sy, as long as Mary remained his widow. Mary was also given £100, to be raised out of the moveable estate, in lieu of her lawful thirds, and the use of one-third of his real estate, as well as "all of the things which she brought with her of all kinds," at their marriage. The remaining part of his estate, both real and personal, including his wife's thirds "when her time therein shall be expired, as also the Negro Girl called Sy, when she returns to the estate as abovesaid, the whole I give to my two sons Townsend and Henry Dickinson, to be equally divided between them." He appointed his third wife's brothers, Samuel and Benjamin Doughty, and his second wife's brother, Penn Townsend, as his executors. Witnesses were Wright Frost, Samuel Cock and Thomas Pearsall, Jr., "a known Quaker." Zebulon's will was proved in Jamaica, N.Y., 3 December 1751, before Samuel Clows, Jr. Wright Frost and Thomas Pearsall, Jr., swore that they saw Zebulon Dickinson, deceased, sign and seal his will. (19) Zebulon's widow, Mary, must have died before 11 February 1756, the date that Townsend and Henry Dickinson were called "sons of Zebulon Dickinson, deceased," in Oyster Bay records, when they sold property they had inherited from their father, to take effect after their mother's decease. (20)

Children (Dickinson), all by his second wife, Rose Townsend, born in Oyster Bay, Long Island, N.Y.: (21)

+38. i. Townsend, born about 1732. +39. ii. Henry, born 13 January 1735.
